Built in the 1920’s, the Yountville Town Hall is a classic mission-style historical building that went through a six-month restoration to improve earthquake resistance. We were originally tasked with removing all of the old rotting wood windows and installing new energy-efficient wood windows. However, due to the historical designation of the building, a decision was to keep the existing window frames and refurbish or replace all 74 of the wood sashes.
Since most of the existing hardware was damaged and the sashes were rotted beyond repair, we made exact replicas of the sashes and installed new antique brass hardware throughout. Although the existing windows were not energy-efficient, we installed 3M Thinsulate energy-efficient glass film to improve them dramatically. The end result is a beautifully restored building that is more efficient while retaining all of the historical aspects of the era in which it was built.
