The Price of Picking the Wrong Window

Purchasing a window can be a fickle thing. It’s not as easy as going to the mall and trying on shoes or clothing…making a purchase and walking out the store with your new items. There’s a reason why purchasing a window is a bit more involved than that. Purchasing a window is a big investment! An investment many homeowners don’t take into account until it’s too late.

Some homeowners find themselves purchasing a window that only suits their budget, not their home, their style, or really their needs. That is not a smart purchase. In fact, you might be better off not purchasing a new window at all if it’s not the right window from the right company. For instance, let’s say you buy a window that is completely wrong for your California home. You’ve ignored performance ratings and the advice from the window company you’ve chosen. But it doesn’t matter, right? You got the window for half the price of your original budget! Now think about how that window is going to perform in your home. If it’s a poor performing window, chances are it’s not going to do all the things that you pay a window to do. This includes helping block out ultra-violet rays that can ruin furniture, antiques and wood flooring, and reducing outside noise that may wake you up in the middle of the night the day before an important event.

A poorly performing window can also allow air leaks that can cause your energy bill to skyrocket and make your home very uncomfortable, leaving you constantly at the thermostat. Doesn’t sound fun, does it? There’s also the other side of the coin that you may have not realized. You pick a beautiful window at a fair price that has amazing performance ratings. But the company you’ve chosen has less than stellar reviews and isn’t very reputable, but you go ahead and hire them anyway because their cheaper than their competitors. Now they install your windows, only you find the installation wasn’t done correctly. There are gaps and cracks between the frames that are going to cause major air leaks. The installers left a mess and made a mess of the surrounding area as well. And they tracked window debris and dirt all over your home from the installation! That’s not what a professional company would do.
